  • Hire Purchase and Rental companies
  • Clubs, professional associations

  • and, obviously, relatives, friends and neighbours.

Packing Hints

General

  • Prepare a “the important box” (carton 1) which can include a kettle, cups, coffee, tea, sugar, cleaners and any other important things you will need straightaway. Perhaps also place bed legs, remote controls, keys and toilet paper here as well.
  • Pack all personal papers, bank/cheque books, keys, etc in a folder to be carried with you.
  • Pack heavier items at the bottom, working up to lighter items on top.
  • Pack books, wine and heavier items in the smaller “book cartons” to avoid overloading. Remember, the removalist is only human.
  • Pack items in “standard cartons” and “book cartons” but not small supermarket boxes. The type and quality of your cartons will directly reflect how your goods will travel.
  • Try not to pack anything into garbage bags, as they can split.
  • Mark the top of each carton clearly with your name and the room you require that carton to be placed in upon arrival.
  • Where possible, reduce the number of items to be moved, bundle all small items together, such as brooms and mops, and place all smaller items in cartons.
  • Make arrangements for the insurance of your goods whilst in transit.

Furniture

  • Empty all drawers of dressers, filing cabinets and cupboards to avoid breaking of runners.
  • All items that can be dismantled should be dismantled. The likes of beds, mirrors, swings, trampolines, self assembled furniture, garden shed, etc.
  • Have an advanced plan for the placement of furniture at your new address and ensure you have someone onsite at your destination to direct the delivery of your furniture to ensure it is placed in the correct location, the first time.
  • To ensure that mud will not be trodden through your home, it may be prudent to have access to sheets of plywood for example, just in case of rain.

Crockery & Glassware

  • Place a layer of crushed paper inside the bottom and tops of cartons containing fragile items.
  • Separate items with packing paper
  • Nest cups and bowls. Stand plates, saucers, platters on their edges. Fill any gaps with packing e.g. scrunched paper or towels.
  • Label all cartons containing fragile items prominently.

Mirrors & Paintings

  • Protect with bubble-wrap or place in a flat-pack carton. Store them standing on their edges in an upright position.

Electrical Equipment incl TVs, computers

  • If the original boxes are not available, use bubble-wrap and good quality packing cartons. Pack any gaps with scrunched paper or towels.

Mowers & other Machinery

  • Drain fuel and oil from equipment to prevent leakage onto other packages and to reduce fire risk.
